Chapter Eight

The click of the lock pinged, and I held my breath, waiting in case the twins came back. The room was dead silent except for the slight flutter of wings. I watched as Jordi glided through the air, her black wings flapping until she landed on the mat in the center of the room. The bird dissolved into a spinning line of pink glitter. The raven disappeared, and Jordi’s body unfolded to a standing position. I never got tired of seeing her transform.

She spun around and whispered, “Evelyn…Evelyn, are you here?”

“I am, but promise me you won’t freak when I come out.”

She spun in all directions, searching for the source of my voice. This could definitely have its advantages.

Jordi stopped spinning, stuck her hip out, and folded her arms, her fingers drumming her elbow. “Come on, come out.”

“Okay, but if I remember rightly, this is going to be intense.” I clutched my stomach. An iciness chilled me to the core, and I gasped.

“Evelyn, are you okay?” Jordi asked, panic lacing her words.

I waited, and then it hit me all at once. A lightning bolt of energy shot through my entire body, jerking me free from the wall. I stood shaking from the inside out until the final ripple of heat worked its way from my toes up to the top of my head, leaving a familiar warm glow in its wake. I dropped my head into my hands and sucked in a few deep breaths. “I totally forgot that part of the spell.”

Jordi stood completely still, her arms hanging loosely at her sides. “That was the coolest thing I have ever seen you do. You came out of the wall.”

“I know. It’s a spell I used when Harriet and I were at the North Pole and needed a disguise to blend in.”

“Well, you absolutely blended with the wall. I couldn’t even see you.”

I shook out the remnants of the spell and refocused my thoughts. “Delta murdered Christopher, and now we have proof. We need to call Detective Prescott,” I said, heading for the door.

“Wait up a second.” Jordi grabbed my shoulder and pulled me up. “We don’t have any real evidence. What are you going to say? While my best friend and I were illegally searching Christopher’s room, the twins came in and confessed to being thieves and killing him because he caught them in the act and was going to blackmail them. We know this because I turned into the wall and overheard them.”

“When you put it like that, I guess it doesn’t sound so good,” I said, deflated. My head ached, and my feet itched to move. I paced and racked my brain for a way around it.

“I suggest we head back to our suite, inform Ebony of our findings, and work out a plan from there. What do you say?”

I stopped pacing and looked at Jordi through squinted eyes. “Since when did you become the strategic, sensible one?”

She giggled and flicked her raven hair over her shoulder.
